Relativistic Jet Stability and Structure from the Alfvén Point Outwards
نویسنده
چکیده
The amplitude of jet distortions and accompanying pressure and velocity fluctuations resulting from Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of three dimensional relativistic jets are explored. The effect of instability on jets as they accelerate from subto super-Alfvénic speeds is explored and a relativistic stabilization mechanism for trans-Alfvénic jets is proposed. The level to which asymmetric instabilities on supermagnetosonic relativistic jets will grow is predicted theoretically and a Doppler boosted “apparent” emissivity is computed. Effects due to helically twisted filamentary structure produced by asymmetric modes of instability should be readily observable on relativistic jets.

Relativistic Jets from Collapsars: Gamma-Ray Bursts
Growing observational evidence supports the proposition that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are powered by relativistic jets from massive helium stars whose cores have collapsed to black holes and an accretion disk (collapsars). We model the propagation of relativistic jets through the stellar progenitor and its wind using a two-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamics code based on the PPM form...
متن کاملTransverse stability of relativistic two-component jets
Context. Astrophysical jets from various sources seem to be stratified, with a fast inner jet and a slower outer jet. As it is likely that the launching mechanism for each component is different, their interface will develop differential rotation, while the outer jet radius represents a second interface where disruptions may occur. Aims. We explore the stability of stratified, rotating, relativ...
متن کاملA relativistic mixing-layer model for jets in low-luminosity radio galaxies
We present an analytical model for jets in Fanaroff & Riley Class I (FR I) radio galaxies, in which an initially laminar, relativistic flow is surrounded by a shear layer. We apply the appropriate conservation laws to constrain the jet parameters, starting the model where the radio emission is observed to brighten abruptly. We assume that the laminar flow fills the jet there and that pressure b...
متن کاملThe Effect of Square Splittered and Unsplittered Rods in Flat Plate Heat Transfer Enhancement
A square splittered and unsplittered rod is placed in a turbulent boundary layer developed over a flat plate. The effect of the resulting disturbances on the local heat transfer coefficient is then studied. In both cases the square rod modifies the flow structure inside the boundary layer. As a result, a stagnation point, a jet and wake area are generated around the square rod, each making a co...
متن کاملGRMHD/RMHD Simulations & Stability of Magnetized Spine-Sheath Relativistic Jets
A new general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) code “RAISHIN” used to simulate jet generation by rotating and non-rotating black holes with a geometrically thin Keplarian accretion disk finds that the jet develops a spine-sheath structure in the rotating black hole case. Spine-sheath structure and strong magnetic fields significantly modify the KelvinHelmholtz (KH) velocity shear drive...
